Turbo Tax: Did Your Tax Return Actually Get Sent?

I received the following email from TurboTax this afternoon:
Dear TurboTax Customer,

We are contacting you to make sure that you have successfully electronically filed your 2006 tax return. As you may know, Intuit’s electronic filing system experienced significant delays on April 17.

We currently show you have finished preparing your return but have not completed the process to submit it to the IRS and/or your state agency electronically. If you have mailed your tax returns to the IRS and, if applicable, your state, or if you have used another preparation method, please disregard this email.

We have worked with the IRS to extend the filing deadline for TurboTax customers. You have until midnight tonight, April 19, to file your federal return without penalty. We are also working with individual states. Already, the following states have extended the filing deadline and we expect other states to do so as well: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, IA, ID, IL, KS, MD, ME, MI, MS, NJ, NM, NY, OK, OR, SC, VA, AR, HI, KY, LA, MN, MT, NE, ND, PA, and WI.

In addition, TurboTax will pay any other penalties you may incur as a result of this delay.

We deeply regret the inconvenience this has caused and apologize for the frustration and anxiety you may have experienced. Please be assured that we are taking every action to ensure this does not happen again.

This email arrived at 8:04pm, four hours before their midnight deadline.

You can’t always rely on technology, but it goes to show the power of Turbo Tax (Intuit) that they were able to get the Fed and the states to extend their deadlines…
