Part II: Dating Online
The most efficient and comfortable way to do almost any type of research is online -- finding a date is no exception. There are 44 million singles Americans, or approximately 40% of the entire US population. Of that, close to 50% have used online dating services. Over 120,000 marriages a year result from relationships started online.
The benefits to online dating are tremendous. The opportunity to meet more people than ever before (exposure) coupled with the ability to leverage the long tail (finding persons with specific characteristics or interests) and to ‘meet’ people at your convenience ...
One thing that has plagued me recently is a lack of anything intelligent to read by young authors speaking to situations immediately relevant to me. I would love to read a work that really speaks to my generation and to the changes in culture, media and conventions currently taking place. If I had the talent to write such a seminal work, I would. Alas I do not. Dave Eggers is probably our greatest hope. In the interim, I thought I would write a series of posts on a topic very relevant to me and to many of my friends and ...
I’m not happy with this blog. I have been blogging a lot recently but I am not getting much satisfaction from it. I don’t like the fact that the majority of my posts for the last six months have been focused on Facebook. Facebook is a huge force, but it’s not the be all end all and it doesn’t play nearly as large a role in my professional life as my reference frequency would indicate.
Over the past couple weeks I have been very into updating my “status” in GChat (equivalent to an away message in AIM) and with some ...
Still Puzzled…
I still have not heard back from Facebook regarding what I allegedly did wrong. However Facebook did indicate that it removed one of my pages! I cannot figure out if this actually happened, but if it did, Facebook is on my shit list. All FB needed to do was politely inform me, take over the disputed Page (brand) and then give the Page to its ‘rightful’ owners. I use 'rightful' loosely. There is nothing indicating authentication is necessary to register a Page, so anyone should be able to do what I have done without consequence. Plus, why erase ...
Apparently I have gone and done something bad on Facebook...
But what did I do? I have no idea, unless this has something to do with the brand pages I made a couple weeks ago. So I have emailed Facebook's Management (the warning does not even reference the disputed ‘Page’ in question) to figure out if this is a mistake.
More to come…
LinkedIn made headlines this morning with the leak that News Corp and LI might be in acquisition negotiations. Back at my parent’s house for Thanksgiving, LinkedIn was also stirring-up conversation…
For the past couple years my sister was a French professor at a Connecticut boarding school. Having recently changed positions (now working in development) she finally got around to accepting my invitation to join LinkedIn. The trouble is -- LinkedIn does not offer an appropriate industry field for educators! For example, there are no option fields for teachers or for persons working at a non-profit. The closest available is ...
I signed into Friendster today out of pure boredom. Although not much has changed (aside from the majority of its original demographic migrating to Facebook) when I ran a search I did notice something new. Under ‘Relationships’ Friendster has added a trademark logo to the phrase “It’s Complicated.” Despite their numerous outlandish patents, this trademark attempt takes the cake and highlights Friendster's feeble attempts to compete using defensive rather than offensive tactics.
Personally, I have no idea what ‘it’s complicated’ means and that is likely the point. In the past I’ve been told it refers to 1) a couple living ...
The New York Times Magazine had a feature on Jimmy Wales and “his stuff.” I find the trend in featuring people’s possessions to be fascinating as it 1) offers incredible insights into their personal lives and 2) goes to show the power of brands and prevalence and acceptance of materialism throughout society. For example, Good Magazine always features an individual and their possessions in each issue.
Also noted in the article is that Jimmy Wales favorite website (other than Wikipedia), is Dopplr, a social travel application I have been testing out.
I once had a professor who believed that if you are not directly impacting revenues at your company, you should find another job. For most companies, revenues result from two things: sales and marketing. Maybe if you are the lead product developer, or primary service provider you also directly impact revenues -- but not always. In the world of 9 to 5 jobs, you need to get yourself as close to the revenue cycle as possible. If you want the company to think of you as a long-term investment, you must figure out how to make yourself essential to the ...
