Back to Basics

I’m not happy with this blog. I have been blogging a lot recently but I am not getting much satisfaction from it. I don’t like the fact that the majority of my posts for the last six months have been focused on Facebook. Facebook is a huge force, but it’s not the be all end all and it doesn’t play nearly as large a role in my professional life as my reference frequency would indicate.

Over the past couple weeks I have been very into updating my “statusâ€ in GChat (equivalent to an away message in AIM) and with some unexpected results. I actually get far more “commentsâ€ and feedback from people when I write simple sentences surrounding what I cooked for dinner, what my current work projects are or even where I am out on a Friday night. Many more comments than when I write some lengthy and well-researched post about Facebook. Why? My guess is because those short posts are about me, and people who know me, enjoy following happenings in my life. It’s simply more human.

While this blog is meant to focus on social media and startups, it also is meant to highlight who I am, what I do and what I represent. However, I never wanted to be the guy who writes about what everyone else writes about – and that’s exactly what I have been doing. Unfortunately Techmeme and Technorati reward and encourage that sort of behavior.

My GChat status updates have reminded me that people want to know about me. At the risk of sounding vain, I am working on some super interesting projects and I want to share more about those experiences. I want this blog to be more personal and I am going to make it so.

Hey Sam, I just wanted to let you know I’ve been an RSS subscriber for some time and quite enjoy your writing and thoughts. I think expanding your focus to include more personal insights and anecdotes helps to make it a well rounded experience, rather than say an analytical journal about the issues that interest you. The “why” behind the interest is just as relevant, and that gets into who you are and what makes you tick.

So here’s to learning more about you via this blog! ;)

Occasionally, you have to refocus and trim your sails to get back on course. You’ve been blogging long enough to have come to that point. I know I did, and on repeated occasions. However, I wonder if you shouldn’t consider creating separate blogs, one for Facebook posts and one that’s more personal, or geared specifically to your other interests.

Jesse – thanks for the vote of confidence! I definitely think this can be a more well rounded read

Paul – I have thought about creating a lifestream (as is the popular thing to do) but the fact is I barely have time to write this blog, let alone manage another platform. Most of these posts are written after 1am (hence the sloppy prose and grammar). The notion is a good one but from a time management perspective I think it’s better to just keep all my posts under one umbrella site.
