Apologies for my blogging absence. I have been cranking away on a few projects that have involved a bunch of travel and unfortunately its left me with little time.
I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite bookmarkers on Del.icio.us. These folks are really my lifeblood for inspiration. They are my private research army. Just as many people check their Google Reader daily, I constantly check my Del.icio.us network for updates. Often times these links and comments become the starting point for conversations and/or blog posts. Without my network, I would be decidedly less knowledgeable. I could go into detail ...
Jonathan Harris has launched his new project, The Whale Hunt.
I love Jonathan’s work, particularly We Feel Fine, a website I believe to be not only a digital art masterpiece, but also one of the most complex and sophisticated prediction applications in existence. Most people don’t understand why when I initially explain so I thought I would explain via a blog musing. Although Jonathan never intends for the his site to be used as I will propose, I think the future possibilities for such technology are simultaneously frightening and exhilarating.
Before reading further, I highly suggest playing with We Feel Fine ...
The sport of squash was mentioned in the New York Times yesterday and not surprisingly the article focused on squash as an elite sport played by the wealthy and used as a means to get budding yuppies cubs into the nation’s top colleges and private schools. Squash currently suffers from a problem that most brands would kill to have: its perception as a luxury product. The issue is one of mass appeal. In order for squash to attain more mainstream sports status, it must shed its connotations of the Ivy League and Greenwich, and instead return the focus to ...
Nope, but it should. Here is why.
eBay is really the master of niche social networks. Using the power of the long tail there are communities that spring up around all kinds of crazy niche goods. For example, one of my good friends is related to the Brandreth family who long ago sold pills that were thought to be a cure for all sorts of diseases. These pills were featured in Moby Dick (see here) and now, vintage pills boxes appear on eBay auctions. Shockingly the bidding can at times be fierce as family members, museums and collectors battle to ...
Unless I am completely missing something, since Google Reader changed its layout, you cannot add new subscriptions (RSS feeds). Anyone know anything about this? It’s driving me nuts.
Zoli – I feel like you might have the answer?
Is It Ever Okay to Pirate Music?: Say I were to pirate music, for example, to rip from Limewire the latest tracks of a musician I just heard playing at a bar. Perhaps his name is Wax Tailor. If I do not pirate the music, I am likely not going to buy his albums. However, by ripping the music (illegally), I come to like it and I tell 10 friends about it. Maybe I play it at a party. Maybe I blog about it. Maybe I attend a concert. Aren’t these outcomes all worth the artist letting me have access ...
I like what Darren has done by posting his most read blogs from Google Reader Trends. I have done the same below and was surprised by a few blogs that I hadn’t realized I’ve been following as closely as I have.
One thing that this exercise also highlighted is how niche my RSS subject matter is. RSS is my primary conduit to information these days, so it's interesting that I am not reading much outside of social-media sites within the reader. For example, I read the New York Times and Fast Company yesterday. I also watched CNN, checked my Facebook ...
An idea came to my roommate and I this evening. Why not try the reverse of what Facebook intended for companies using Facebook Pages? Instead of advertising an existing company, why not use the Pages medium to launch something new?
But, what to launch? Since I have been writing about dating in 2007, it seemed obvious! I could kill two birds with one stone. Thus is born experiment number two: “New York Singles Scene” (NYSS). In the spirit of anti-stealth, I have no idea how we will monetize this business, but that’s not really the point (see below).
Here is ...
