Business Idea: Amateur Produced Commercials

Several months ago an amateur commercial originally created by a student for the iPod touch was picked up by Apple and run in major television spots. I think we are in an age where amateur content is frequently superior (at least in ideation) to stuff professionally produced. In his brilliant Ted Talk from 2007, JJ Abrams (Creator of Lost and Cloverfield) talks about the democratization of media. Specifically, Abrams suggests that whereas he used to tell aspiring writers to “go write now thanks to advances in technology he can tell aspiring directors to “go make movies. According to Abrams, innovations in technology have leveled the playing field to such an extent that consumers can access equipment rivaling that of the directing elite for affordable prices.

All this got me thinking that it would extremely cool if someone put together a video voting site that was specific to branded commercials. Users could upload UGC videos of commercials they produced on behalf of brands. Whopper Freakout is a great example of what can be accomplished with video. The hope would be that brands, a la Apple, pick up the rights to some of the commercials. From a crowd sourcing perspective, a brand would already have good idea of of a commercial’s potential viral success since the community would be voting on the commercials. Brands might even upload concept videos and allow users to “make suggestionsâ€ for improvements

Has anyone done something like this yet? Thoughts?

XLNTads and Zooppa are already doing this. OpenAd.net is similar, but their network is for professional creatives. From Madison Avenue's perspective consumer-generated advertising reached its high point during the 2007 Super Bowl, with CGA-campaigns by Doritos, NFL and Chevrolet. No such campaigns this year.

@Peter. Hmm…I had not heard of these guys (XLNTads or Zooppa) – I
will check them out and see if I can do some digging (owners, funding,
    successes, etc). Great find Peter!

Just did a story on CGA for Dutch magazine Adformatie. I had interviewed XLNTads at the last Ad:Tech NY:

There's also a company called AdWidth that's not up yet:

    About Adwidth

Founded in 2007 by Roger Huitt. Adwidth (http://www.adwidth.com) is website entity owned and operated by Veoshift Inc. Adwidth is a platform that allows users and independent producers to create and broadcast video commercials for featured brands. Headquartered in San Jose, California, the company is currently seeking capital.

LiveRail was supposed to be in the same category, but looks different, more sophisticated. Have to look into that one…

Heinz did something similar last year with their solicitation of UGC for a new campaign — complete with prizes… it didn't fair to well, but thats not to say it wouldn't do well for another product/variant/market

Also check out NewTeeVee's thoughts here: http://newteevee.com/2007/10/26/a-tale-of-two-u…

    Hey Sam

A friend and I recently had that similar light bulb moment in our heads about 9 months ago. So we decided to Jump in do our own start-up again. AiMade – http://www.adimade.com/. Adimade is a user created advertising site that aims to bring together the talent of the YouTube community with businesses trying to break away from the costly, old and boring ways of advertising.

Our starting point was we were finding it hard to understand why/how companies where paying ad agencies big bucks for content that was generally boring and Amateur Video Creators on sites like youtube were getting paid nothing for content that is original, funny, authentic and entertaining.

we are Australia based (Melbourne) and really bootstrapping things. We launched (in beta of course) about 2 weeks ago – and are running a couple of test projects (with real cash prizes!) before we roll out the branded projects.
Interestingly, in the past 10 months there have been a few UGA sites that have launched, XLNTADS, black turtle, genius rocket, zooppa, memlabs not to mention the numerous other UGA competitions run by companies through youtube and myspace.

Keep up the blogiing, real interesting stuff. I have yet to have a real good look at Heights Media, but it looks like pretty interesting stuff.

    Cheers mate,
    Nat

But today, we are extremely proud to present a SneakerFiles nike air max 2010 exclusive confirmation that the Air Jordan X (10) will drop this month as a quickstrike release. Not just any Air Jordan 10, but rather nike air max 95 the Chicago colorway with 45—the number Michael Jordan wore when he came back from retirement—on the ankle. nike air max 90 This colorway of the AJ 10 is one of the most popular nike air max nl styles ever created, and will surely result in lines outside stores for days and may even cause riots. The Air Jordan X (10) “Chicago 45″ will release at only 150 sneaker stores across the United States with each retailer only receiving 23 pairs.
