What Schwag Has the Best ROI?

All startups seem to feel an obligatory pressure to produce schwag: T-shirts, stickers, pens, etc.

My question is what schwag has the best ROI and why?

If anyone follows Gary Vaynerchuck on Twitter you may know he is giving schwag away under the name, Santagayvee (http://twitter.com/santagaryvee). We'll see what sort of marketing/PR this produces but it's a good idea. http://tv.winelibrary.com/santagaryvee

At conferences, I like to give out nice bags. You're logo is carried around all day and they give people somewhere to put all those one pagers. Backpacks are good too.

@Andrew Bags are definitely a great idea…I will forever have the
Adobe logo burned into my memory from this years SXSW

I don't think that the exact type of schwag matters– so long as people will use it or it is something that is so cool that people see others with it and want it. Also, having something to do with your business would help too :)

I agree, it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's consistent with your branding and somewhat related to your product. I am not a big fan of schwag, unless it's something that's engaging, fun 'cool' or something that's useful like a bag would be my top choice.

Stickers for the tech geeks definitely. We've had great success with
    Sticker Giant: http://www.stickergiant.com/

    Moo also has great stickers

    Any other good suggestions?

Stickers for techy nomads are the way to go I think. Give a geek a cool sticker and on his a-laptop it will go. Apple has even done this and give people those white apples to put on their cars, further creating their brand cult. You would never see this work with a Windows/Microsoft sticker.
