Unused Gift Cards Should Go to Charity

by Sam on May 1, 2008

I just used a Starbucks gift card I had been given. I got it back from the Barista with $.90 remaining. Likewise I have a gift card from Best Buy with $4 remaining on it.

I’d like to see a more charitable way of dealing with ‘left-over’ gift cards. If you have less than $10 left stores should ban together and offer to split the difference; give me the option on the spot to have 50% or more be donated to a worthwhile charity like the One Campaign.

Great post! I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards, and we blog about gift card issues on savvywallet.com. The donation concept is awesome. It's actually something that we are working on. It's part of our fundraising program. We're probably 3-6 months out of it. It's actually a pretty technical process. We love the challenge, and we know it will provide a huge services to charities like one campaign. This is my first time on your site, LOVE the name. (it's our company's name). Thanks for the post. Glad there are like minded people out there!

i've had this idea for a while now and am now researching how to go about it. We are part of ONE.org and work with children with AIDS and would love to know more about collecting left over gift cards to bring more money to our programs so we can help more children. Ideas?
