Innovating Online Bank Accounts

by Sam on December 8, 2008

I have been playing around with Drop.io quite a bit recently and it got me thinking that my online bank account could really serve as my “online vault.” At least perceptually I consider the data held within to be my best protected stuff on the web. Whether true or not, I trust my bank account’s security much more than say my Gmail account.

Along these lines I’d like to be able to store other secure things there such as passwords, hard drive backups, or other important files and images. For example, I could see Citibank partnering with Mozy to offer such services.

Clearly banks could use another revenue stream and providing added value services could also greatly increase engagement with banks’ websites as well as build brand awareness.

    Hey Sam,

Thanks for the usual great posts –

similarly in the news, you might consider using your world of warcraft account for tighter security than some banks :P

At the end of the day though, wherever your data sits, having it encrypted (e.g. using aes) will keep it safe, even if its on public servers – then again, security is a continuous process and the weakest link changes dynamically e.g. between the user, the medium and the providers.

    Cheers!
