The Lowest Common Denominator

by Sam on February 19, 2010

In my thinking about how web technologies are evolving I think attempting to conceptualize or invent the next Facebook is nearly impossible. Massively disruptive startups “just are.” IMO it’s not possible to know what will be the next Twitter or Facebook because these types of platforms/applications are outgrowths of the current state of human interaction. Such technology arrives just at the right time to grow in tandem with new manners, social gesture and desires. I believe with we have moved past the brute force of functionality being the deciding factor of what we will use next. Instead, we find new technologies that suit a particular direction the world is shifting and that technology co-evolves with this shift.

So, my thought is to focus on what I think of as the “lowest common denominator”. What do all these platforms and applications have in common? Are there attributes so common, or so core to the platform, that any next-generation platform is also likely to use them?

In my mind, discovering and iterating on least common denominators create excellent positioning for startups. Such an approach would be largely platform agnostic, highly defensible and probably simple enough to grow rapidly and at tremendous scale.

Hmm.

So what would be an example of a lowest common denominator Or just a low one? Would the status update be an example?

Specifically I've been thinking of the hyperlink. Status updates maybe

Greg — your blog looks super interesting. I've been trying to learn more about the advertising space and would love to chat sometime

I think the internet is just starting to evolve into society's infrastructure. And because of that the potential of web apps should be eyed in a similar fashion.

I think the lowest common denominator would have to be a generational effect or “pull”. That's what I think is the secret sauce behind Facebook – it gives it the infrastructure-like permanence built up by cohorts of college students. Ten, twenty, years from now I'll still be checking my friends' photos on Facebook to see what's going on in their life.

I can't say that about Twitter or Google Buzz though.

great point Sayem. that is definitely an amazing thing…My parents have no idea how to get back in touch with former classmates, etc, let alone having kept up with them through the years. I wonder if there is something to the idea of people connecting who have a shared common experience…i.e. college vs. just a general social connection like email (i.e. google buzz)

Very enjoyable read. I believe the internet is the lowest common denominator.

I think some common denominators are “share” and “connect”. And now most people even “monetize”, just like what happened to blogging.

The lowest common denominator is the desire to connect with other human beings. Technology has brough the world closer and closer, although it has sped things up, it has created the ability for us to reach out, create connections, bonds and as I believe Seth Godin states, tribes. Tribes who want leaders to guide them and inspire them.

thanks for the comment Leslie! Definitely true, the desire to connect is a huge thing. And I guess what am fishing for is the underlying pieces of technology people to use to establish those connections…couldn't agree more though!

Ah Gosh you made me remind my college days. It was really pinching us in the maths lecture to find out the greatest and lowest common denominator and all. Though I had good pick up so all my classmates use to copy from me and come to learn from me.

Following emergent technologies and imagining what new possibilities they have gives foresight for the next big thing.

We imagine what future we want, then we create it.

Very pleasant to read. I believe that the Internet is the most common.
