On Thursday I had the privilege of attending an event thrown for Daniel Squadron, a 28 year old Democrat currently running for State Senate. I’ve met Daniel a few times over the last few years and like him a lot. He understands that most people, especially younger folks, don’t know or particularly care about state government. However Daniel’s not afraid to give you an earful on why it does matter. New York State government used to be a leading force in key legislations. He'd like see it return to its once prominent form. In contrast, current turnout for state elections ...
Is It Ever Okay to Pirate Music?: Say I were to pirate music, for example, to rip from Limewire the latest tracks of a musician I just heard playing at a bar. Perhaps his name is Wax Tailor. If I do not pirate the music, I am likely not going to buy his albums. However, by ripping the music (illegally), I come to like it and I tell 10 friends about it. Maybe I play it at a party. Maybe I blog about it. Maybe I attend a concert. Aren’t these outcomes all worth the artist letting me have access ...
As happens many a Sunday, today I spent the afternoon with some friends getting brunch and then browsing an independent bookstore on Court Street in Brooklyn.
I spend an unhealthy amount of time browsing blogs and websites. Fewer and fewer of these sites (and their content) are inspiring me. Yes, there is a lot of interesting stuff going on with Facebook, OpenSocial and the like, but everyone writes about the same stuff. It’s really a Catch 22: to be well-read you need to write about what everyone else writes about (think Techmeme). However, to be an upper echelon blog, you ...
We hosted the inaugural Brooklyn OpenCoffee this past Friday at Retreat NYC. The coffee was great and the conversations even better, spanning from best practices in blogging SEO, to startups (in the online collaboration space), to the impact social media plays in the lives of the elderly.
Attendees included:
A Child Grows in Brooklyn
Convos
JAR Group
Fiaga
Heights Media Group
We’re planning for the next gathering to be Friday October 26th at a site TBD.
While in DC I helped start an OpenCoffee Club. When I arrived in Brooklyn a few days ago I realized there was not one here either. This means Brooklyn OpenCoffee is born!
Our first meeting will be next Friday (October the 12th) at Retreat NYC in DUMBO a Brooklyn coffee shop yet to be determined. We'll run from 9-11am and people can drop by for as long, or little as they like.
For now, feel free to join the Google Group and we'll announce the location by Monday

Unbelievably, I forgot to announce on this blog that I am moving back to New York. As of Sunday I will be based out of Brooklyn Heights -- returning to the city I left almost four years ago.
With that said, here is an ode to my time in DC.
When I arrived in DC I was doing securities litigation, studying for the LSAT and thinking I would join the ranks of K Street lawyers. I came to DC largely because I didn't know anyone here and I didn't want to do what all my other friends were doing ’“ ...
