My friend Chris invited me to a talk this morning at the Cornell Club in Manhattan entitled, "Engaging the media in a brave new world."
The talk featured Sharon Tolpin, Senior Vice President, Articulate Communications, and Erick Schonfeld, Co-Editor of TechCrunch.com. Honestly, I got very little out of the talk but what struck me was what happened at the panel's conclusion: the moderator asked everyone to write on the back of a business card two types of people they want to be introduced to. The Club then promised to connect everyone to one of those people within a week.

The other day my roommate and I used Google Maps to look up the address of a bar where we were meeting friends. The image above is the location our search returned.
Clearly, 14 Orchard Street in New York City is not located in New Jersey.
Google isn’t perfect. The more we come to rely on it, and other web-based companies as sources for critical information, the more scary such results are.

Update: Just looked at at my feed reader and Venture Chronicles is reporting that Gmail is borked...that's ironic timing
I'd like to compile a list of NYC based Twitter-ers (those using Twitter.com) who have a predilection for startups.
I was so busy in 2007 that I wasn't able to attend many (maybe any?) NYC tech events. 2008 will be different. I’d like to get more connected. I’d like to have more of an ‘online community’ to contribute and learn from. Twitter will be starting point 1.
In compiling this list, please drop your Twitter handle and/or link in the comments below
Here is my handle: squasher98. Just click “follow”

An idea came to my roommate and I this evening. Why not try the reverse of what Facebook intended for companies using Facebook Pages? Instead of advertising an existing company, why not use the Pages medium to launch something new?
But, what to launch? Since I have been writing about dating in 2007, it seemed obvious! I could kill two birds with one stone. Thus is born experiment number two: “New York Singles Scene” (NYSS). In the spirit of anti-stealth, I have no idea how we will monetize this business, but that’s not really the point (see below).

I was at an event tonight where an interesting topic came up. Someone in the audience asked a panel of New York City based, early stage-ish venture capital partners “why they didn’t invest in web 2.0 companies?” The gentleman asking the question specifically cited Union Square Ventures, who was not represented on the panel. USV came up several more time in other questions, making it clear that was the firm the audience knew.
The unanimous response among the VCs (clearly annoyed) was that they “did invest in such companies, but we that we didn’t know about it because they prefer ...
I recently got my hands on a database of New York City venture capitalists and was able to run some numbers. Altogether the list represented 29 firms and 259 VC’s. Despite opinions to the contrary – at least in New York – it certainly helps to have an MBA and in particular, have attended Harvard Business School…how east coast :)
Some Stats:
Only 9.6% of NY- based VCs are women
Of the 250 who had listed their undergraduate alma maters 41% attended an Ivy League school
140 (56%) hold MBA degrees
Of the MBA’s, exactly 50% went to Harvard Business ...
Oddly, despite San Francisco’s reputation as the social media hub, not one of the ‘top’ independent digital agencies specializing in social media holds offices in the bay area. Where do these social media bad boys all shack up then? New York City!
Advertising Age recently published a list of the top 17 independent digital agencies. Of those 17, five were specifically listed with social media as a core offering. These social media specialists include: LBI/ Iconnicholson, 360I, Campfire Media, Deep Focus, and iCrossing. Of these five, all but iCrossing have offices in New York.
Sounds great, right? Well a social ...

What am I doing wrong?
Okay, I'm tired of beating around the bush. I'm a beautiful (spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. I'm articulate and classy. I'm not from New York. I'm looking to get married to a guy who makes at least half a million a year. I know how that sounds, but keep in mind that a million a year is middle class in New York City, so I don't think I'm overreaching at all.
Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could you ...
Yesterday I attended the MBA MEC (Media & Entertainment Conference) at Columbia University and I wanted to share my thoughts and observations on the event.
Overall, I thought the conference was put together very well but I was disappointed with the lack of technological knowledge of the panelists ’“ especially because technology is so integral to the future of entertainment and media.
The key note speaker, Peter Cuneo, Vice-Chairman and former CEO of Marvel Entertainment was excellent. Peter has orchestrated an incredible turnaround at Marvel lifting the stock price from $.80 in 2000 to $29 in 2006. One interesting tidbit is ...
